Berlin’s Crate.io raises €2.5 million to expand its San Francisco offices

SQL database developers Crate.io has raised a €2.5 million seed round led by Vito Ventures to expand its new headquarters in San Francisco.

Dawn Capital, Draper Esprit, Speedinvest, and Sunstone Capital also participated in the round.

As well as its new offices, the funds will be used for the further development of the software and to build out its sales teams.

The German company is eyeing up the internet of things and Industry 4.0 – applications such as the smart factory – as its main opportunity moving forward for its CrateDB product. Yesterday it announced the general availability after three years of development.

“CrateDB is the key to gaining real-time insight from the ever increasing data volumes from sensors, machines, servers, log files and IoT applications and to turning them into benefits for any enterprise. This is the first time that such a technology can easily be used by any SQL developer,” said CEO Christian Lutz.

“The amount of machine generated data is growing exponentially and high-performance systems for digital processing have become an important element for the digital industry,” added Dr Benedikt Herles, managing partner of Vito Partners. “It is developments like Crate.io that make the smart factory possible in the first place.”
