Finnish learning game studio Lightneer raises a $5 million seed round

Finnish educational game developer Lightneer, which was founded by Rovio (Angry Birds) alumns, has raised a seed funding round of $5 million. The round was led by GSV Acceleration, with participation from Helsinki-based IPR.VC, the French VC Brighteye, and Reach Capital from Silicon Valley.

Lightneer is trying to create what it calls a "fun-learning revolution". The startup's first game, Big Bang Legends, which was developed along with science experts, focuses on learning key concepts from physics and chemistry. Big Bang Legends introduces players to all of the 118 atoms of the periodic table, depicted as collectible, adorable atom-hero creatures.

"Kids can learn hundreds of Pokémons, and all of their features by heart," said Lightneer's CEO Lauri Järvilehto in a statement. "How hard can 118 atom-heroes be to learn?"

The game has been launched in South East Asia, Hong Kong, and Finland, and Lightneer is preparing to launch the game globaly in January 2018.
