Weengs, a shipping service for small and online retailers, lands £2.2 million seed round

Weengs, a shipping service for SMEs and online retailers, has raised £2.2 million in a seed round to build out its presence in London and launch in another European city. The funding comes from Local Globe along with Cherry Ventures and Seedcamp.

Weengs, which is based in London and was founded last year, gives small and online retailers access to professional packing services. Retailers send a photo of their goods via the app and request one of Weeng’s “angels” to pick it up within an hour. From there the item is taken to a warehouse, packaged professionally and shipped out with a shipping partner like Royal Mail, DHL, and DPD.

The service allows smaller sellers to provide an option to their customers for same day shipping that they may not have been possible before. “Using our service, independents can start to compete for the first time with giants like Amazon for speed and reliability of delivery,” said Greg Zontanos, CEO of Weengs.

It’s currently available in central London and some surrounding areas, which is serviced by 15 "angels". It charges customers £5 pickup fee plus cost of shipping. It has yet to determine its next city but said Germany was on its radar.

Weengs has proven popular with eBay sellers and small shops, according to the startup. “We offer premium logistics to the little guys, so that they can focus on building their business,” added cofounder Alex Christodoulou.

Weengs has the potential to do for shipping what Uber did for cabs, said Robin Klein, founding partner at LocalGlobe, one of the investors in this round. “We expect that it will appeal in cities across Europe that are rapidly adopting online shopping as a way of life.”
