Needles, no more! The Smart Lollipop raises €320,000 to develop non-invasive testing device

Catalan-based health tech The Smart Lollipop has raised €320,000 to begin clinical testing and certifications for its non-invasive paediatric testing device to help detect illnesses in children through saliva instead of drawing blood.

The round was led by Ship2B Ventures with participation from EconomistasBAN and Lavanda Ventures.

Founded in 2017, the Spanish health tech aims to speed up medical diagnosis by making it accessible, fun and digital with a candy. The candy is the company’s medical device that analyses saliva to detect disease. According to the med tech, deploying the candy device will help to detect hypercholesterolemia or celiac disease through a saliva sample in the paediatric sector and monitor other medical indicators in the adult population. It will also improve the experience of users, patients, and doctors, by replacing invasive tests such as blood tests. At the same time, promote the prevention of diseases, the simplification of processes, and the digitization of medicine.

Co-founder and CEO Diana Ballart said: “The smart candy not only improves the experience of users, patients and doctors, replacing an invasive test such as a blood test but it also promotes disease prevention, process simplification and the digitisation of medicine.”

The Smart Lollipop was earlier a part of the ISDI Accelerator and UNICEF initiative, UNICEF Lab, which backed the development of its smart candy prototype, starting with clinical studies in hospitals in order to complete the procedures for medical certification of the device.
