Irish cinema startup Showtime Analytics has received a €1.2 million investment from the film subsidiary of Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba.

Showtime provides data analytics services to the cinema industry. The investment will go towards hiring more staff at Showtime’s Dublin office, and to adding new products and services.

“Data analysis is in its infancy in the movie industry, but its potential value is huge," chief executive Richie Power told the Irish publication Fora, adding that the investment, "marks the beginning of Showtime's global journey."

Showtime will work with the Alibaba Pictures-owned ticketing systems supplier, Yueke, which serves over 2,000 movie theatres in China.

Showtime says it wants to help cinema owners and film distributors unlock the potential of their data and help them understand more about the types of films being made, how they’re being made and marketed, and how audiences are responding to them.

China is expected to overtake the United States as the world’s largest movie market by the end of the year, according to Bloomberg.
