Austrian micro speaker startup USound raises €12 million from eQventure and ARM founder

Austria’s USound, which develops micro speakers, has raised €12 million from eQventure and angel investor Hermann Hauser, the founder of ARM.

The funds will be invested into USound’s market entry with mass production along with the hiring of new staff, growing from 30 engineers to 50. The company is about to fill its first customer orders, according to CEO Ferruccio Bottoni.

USound has built the “smallest speaker in the world” based on MEMS (Micro Electro Mechanical Systems) technology, which consumes less energy.

“Headphones are only a starting point, our product is set to have an impact across all aspects of life as it enables a new paradigm for audio smart systems in portable devices,” said Bottoni.

“The company is led by an excellent management team with a wealth of experience and impressive track record in microsystem technology. I am convinced that USound can soon lead the billion dollar micro speaker market into the digital age,” added ARM founder Hermann Hauser.
