It’s a big day for Prezi, the Hungarian-American company behind the nifty cloud-based presentation platform with the same name.

At the Slush conference in Helsinki, Finland, the startup is today announcing a massive round of funding totalling $57 million and some impressive user and engagement milestones.

The fresh cash comes Spectrum Equity, a 20-year old growth capital firm based in the United States, although we should note prior backer Accel Partners also chipped in for the round.

The money is meant to accelerate Prezi’s global growth, which is another topic well worth discussing.

Often seen as a gimmicky technology that would never appeal to a mass audience in the early days, 50 million users worldwide are now using Prezi to make and share visually appealing interactive presentations, about double the amount of users it boasted a year ago.

All in all, 160 million ‘Prezis’ have been created to date, the company says in a statement.

Peter Arvai, the co-founder and CEO of Prezi who was just awarded the prize of European Web Entrepreneur of the Year by Europioneers, says he is happy to have Spectrum Equity join its roster of investors, which also includes Accel, Denmark’s Sunstone Capital and TED Conferences.

“We are thrilled to have Spectrum on board as an investor in Prezi. They understand our business, have deep expertise with cloud-based software companies and have a long term perspective, just like we do,” said Arvai in a statement.

“Our expanding community relies on Prezi to help make their presentations memorable – from the classroom to the boardroom. We are here to build the best experience for presenters to engage their audiences,” he added.

The company was founded in Budapest back in 2009, and has certainly come a hell of a way after I first wrote about them on TechCrunch in April of that year.

Now let’s see how far they can go with all this fresh gold in its treasure chest.
