Microsoft to slash 18,000 jobs in the next year; Nokia unit hit hard with 12,500 job cuts

As expected, Microsoft today announced that a high number of jobs will be cut across the company.

In the next year, 18,000 jobs will be cut across the board, and the software giant's Nokia Devices and Services is expected to account for about 12,500 of those - or roughly half the workforce.

Microsoft says its workforce reductions are driven primarily by two outcomes: "work simplification" as well as "Nokia Devices and Services integration synergies and strategic alignment".
