UK-based radiation detection company Symetrica lands £3 million

Southampton-based radiation detection and identification hardware company Symetrica has raised £3 million to support its expansion in the US. Parkwalk and Nesta led the round, which also included follow-on investments from Tennants Ventures, Albion Investments, and Technology Venture Partners.

Founded in 2002 by the former head of Physics and Astrophysics at Southampton University, Symetrica builds and sells radiation detectors of all sorts, from handheld devices to mobile solutions and portal monitors. Its devices are used by customs and border protection, law enforcement and military, emergency services and first responders.

The company has offices and manufacturing sites in the UK and the US and employs 75 people. Symetrica plans to use the capital injection to accelerate the US expansion and open a larger manufacturing facility in Westford, Massachusetts this summer.
