Amsterdam's CodeSandbox raises $12.7 million Series A to launch new collaborative devtool

CodeSandbox, an Amsterdam-based startup building a web development platform for collaborative teams, has raised a $12.7 million Series A round led by EQT Ventures. Other backers include existing investors Kleiner Perkins, Arches Capital, and angel investor Guillermo Rauch, who have been joined by two new angels, Andreas Blixt and Daniel Gebler.

CodeSandbox provides a web-based development platform that allows developers to prototype and collaborate. So far over 10 million projects have been created on the platform and remain available to the 2.5 million monthly users. But the company’s goal is to enable whole product teams to work together with code, not just developers. Devtools so far have been built around programming as a solo pursuit, says the startup. Modern teams operate more collaboratively, though. Designers, testers, product owners and other roles want to give feedback and iterate quickly, which most tools on the market don’t accommodate.

In fact, Facebook built its own. “At Facebook, we used FBFiddle — the company’s prototyping tool for code that was built directly into its development workflow. However, most companies don’t have the resources to create such custom tooling,” says Ives van Hoorne, CodeSandbox’s CEO and a former developer at the big tech company. So the Dutch startup’s solution is to roll out a new product, with the help of this new funding. Pro Workspaces will allow whole product teams to work on sandboxes together. A designer can provide quick UI feedback, a product manager can see how their specification is being implemented and marketing will be able to update associated copy. The platform is currently only available by invitation, with some users to be taken from the waitlist over the next few months. Founded in 2017 by van Hoorne and industrial designer Bas Buursma (COO), the startup previously raised a $2.9 million seed round last year.
