After 3.5 million downloads, Berlin language learning app maker Beelinguapp raises $1.1 million

Beelinguapp, a Berlin-based language learning software startup, has scored $1.1 million in seed funding after reaching 3.5 million 'organic' downloads for its app.

The round was led by Joyance Partners, a US-based VC fund, and EquityPitcher Ventures, a network-driven growth VC from Switzerland. A group of angel investors also participated in this round, including eBay Kleinanzeigen CEO Paul Heimann and the Atomico Angel Programme in Germany.

Built by former (Mexican-born) English teacher David Montiel, Beelinguapp's audiobook app lets users view texts in two languages, side by side. Montiel and his team claim this split-screen approach merges the best of both language learning and content, empowering users to learn any language by reading their favourite stories, fairy tales, news articles, or even music. It currently has 14 languages to choose from.

The startup is a recent graduate from the Techstars accelerator program in Berlin, where Montiel met co-founder Eva Drago and Head of Business Operations Zack Hoffmann.
