Former OpenAI policy adviser appointed UK Prime Minister’s AI adviser

A former OpenAI executive has been appointed as the UK prime minister's new AI adviser, replacing Matt Clifford, who stood down from the role in June this year. Jade Leung is currently the chief technology officer at the AI Security Institute, the government body, a role she will continue in, splitting her time between Number 10 and the AI Security Institute.

Leung worked at ChatGPT developer OpenAI between 2021 and 2023, as governance and policy adviser and also as governance lead. The former Oxford and Cambridge student, who holds a PHD in AI governance, has also worked at the Centre for the Governance of AI. Leung will report to the UK prime minister Keir Starmer and the tech minister Peter Kyle.

The government said: “As part of the role, she will work to position the UK as the leading nation to help unlock the benefits and prepare for the impacts of transformative AI, working closely with the prime minister to harness the technology as it delivers the strong foundations and economic growth which are central to the government’s Plan for Change.”

Clifford tweeted: “Absolutely delighted about this - major upgrade on the last AI adviser! Jade brings a tonne of experience in frontier labs, VC and government and will do an amazing job of ensuring the UK is an AI winner.”

Clifford stood down in June this year after six months in the role for family reasons.
