Deskless employee platform Sona raises £1.6 million in pre-seed round

Seeking to transform how deskless employees manage their work and interact with their employer, London-based Sona has raised £1.6 million in a pre-seed round. The funding is expected to accelerate the development and adoption of the app.

Founded by serial entrepreneurs Ben Dixon, Oli Johnson , and Steffen Wulff Petersen, Sona draws upon a now three-year-old survey (and associated writeup in VentureBeat) that found that 80% of employees do not regularly work at a desk, and yet only 1% of all enterprise software investment is committed to this statistic.

The startup is far from alone in the space, as London/New York-based YOOBIC raised $50 million no less than three weeks ago, Tel Aviv-based Connecteam, a healthly $37 million three months ago, and London-based Blink, £8.2 million a year ago.

Speedinvest led the investment round, with Partner Markus Lang commenting, “When a world class team of repeat founders builds a well differentiated product in a huge, under-digitized market, it’s a no brainer to partner with them. We're beyond excited to be on board and look forward to supporting them in building a category leader.”

As for that differentiator, co-founder Oli Johnson comments, “The software that is available is for companies to manage their frontline workforces. Hardly anything has been specifically designed to benefit the frontline. We started Sona because we want every frontline employee to feel valued and have more flexibility and control at work.”

As for those employee benefits, we’ll have to wait and see.

Sona has been developed in partnership with customers in the care, retail and voluntary sectors, including Colten Care and MHI UK (Shout 85258) and is expected to launch next month.

In addition to Speedinvest’s lead, the pre-seed round also saw participation from angel investors Andy Leaver from Notion Capital, Lorenzo Franzi from Flash Ventures, and several partners from Novator Partners.
