German Grünenthal Group acquires Adhesys Medical for its surgical sealant technology

The German Grünenthal Group has announced the acquisition of Adhesys Medical GmbH, along with its US-based affiliate Adhesys Medical Inc. Both companies are based in Aachen, Germany. Adheysys Medical is a medtech startup that focuses on the development of adhesives used in surgery.

The Grünenthal Group is a pharmaceutical company specializing in pain, gout and inflammation. Its aim is to bring four to five new products to the market by 2022 for unmet medical needs. Adhesys Medical has beel developing sealants that can be used in surgery based on a polyurethane technology platform.

"These highly innovative wound sealants not only have the potential to help surgeons seal external wounds, but also the more difficult wet wounds during cardiac and gastrointestinal surgery. This allows us to tap into the global $1 billion surgical sealants market," said Gabriel Baertschi, CEO of the Grünenthal Group, in a statement.

"We believe that such innovative surgical glues may present a true alternative to traditional techniques in closing wounds during or after surgery - both on the skin as well as within the body," added Klaus-Dieter Langner, PhD, Chief Scientific Officer of the Grünenthal Group in a press release. "This platform enables next generation wound closure in unprecedented areas of surgery and addresses significant unmet medical needs."
