Saldum Ventures, the Spanish parent company of e-commerce brands like Hawkers (sunglasses), Miss Hamptons, Northweek and Wolfnoir, has closed a €50 million Series A round of financing.
The round was led by the founders of Tuenti, Félix Ruiz (of Jobandtalent), and Hugo Arévalo, who joins the Hawkers team as Executive Chairman. O’Hara Financial, a fund of which Venezuelan businessman Alejandro Betancourt is a major shareholder, also chipped in, together with a group of private investors.
Saldum Ventures says it will use the cash to bankroll international consolidation, along with the entry into new countries and the development of new projects.
The company also claims that the sizeable funding round (though Cabify's is still on record as the biggest funding round in Spain to date) was completed less than a month after negotiations with investors kicked off.
The e-commerce company has been bootstrapped (and self-reportedly profitable) so far.
Álex Moreno, a co-founder and CEO of Hawkers, said: "These investors respect our identity and our freedom when it comes to working. They understand and they share the spirit of Hawkers, which means that our philosophy is not going to be affected.”
The company has set ambitious objectives for the next few years: attain a turnover in 2017 of €150 million and €300 million in 2018. One to watch, with or without flashy sunglasses.
