Seeking to further bolster its music intelligence capabilities, SoundCloud has acquired Singapore-based Musiio. SoundCloud is expecting to further pan for gold, in both music and the artists that produce it, amongst its mountains of data, with Musiio providing fresh picks, pots, and pans. The financials of the deal were not disclosed.
Using machine learning capabilities to ‘listen’ to music at breakneck speed, Musiio can not only understand what it’s listening to, but automatically tag this audio and output playlist recommendations, all the while detecting identifying characteristics and patterns.
According to Musiio, when combined with SoundCloud’s existing technologies, it will form the core of the discovery experience, ultimately giving users the crucial ‘one-up’ and providing them with the hottest tunes of tomorrow, today.
“SoundCloud hosts more music from more creators than any platform on the planet. Acquiring Musiio accelerates our strategy to better understand how that music is moving in a proprietary way, which is critical to our success,” commented SoundCloud’s Eliah Seton.
Founded in 2018 by British CEO Hazel Savage and Swedish CTO Aron Pettersson, Musiio raised only $1 million in a seed funding round led by London’s Entrepreneur First back in 2018 and counts brands including Vans, Sony Music, Epidemic Sound, and BeatStars amongst its client base.
According to SoundCloud, they intend to fully integrate Musiio’s existing staff, with Savage assuming the role of VP, Music Intelligence and Pettersson VP, AI and Machine Learning.
“SoundCloud is not only a legendary household name but also an artist forward business that I believe is the future of the new, holistic music industry,” said Savage. “I am incredibly proud that after 4 years of building Musiio we are now part of SoundCloud.”
