Edinburgh-based semiconductor company Singular Photonics has raised $2.15 million in an oversubscribed funding round to accelerate the development of its next generation of SPAD-based image sensors. The round was led by ACF Investors, with participation from Wren Capital, Cambridge Angels, Scottish Enterprise, Quantum Exponential and Old College Capital.
Spun out of the University of Edinburgh from research led by digital imaging researcher Professor Robert Henderson, Singular Photonics develops image sensors based on single-photon avalanche diode (SPAD) technology. The fabless semiconductor company has two commercially available product families, Andarta and Sirona.
Unlike conventional image sensors, which primarily measure the intensity of light, SPAD sensors can detect and precisely time individual photons. This allows imaging systems to capture information that may not be accessible to conventional cameras, supporting applications that require high sensitivity or precise timing.
Singular Photonics combines SPAD technology with on-chip computation, enabling data to be processed directly at the point where light is detected. This enables imaging systems to analyse information in real time while reducing the amount of data that needs to be transferred for external processing.
The company's technology is being developed for applications across machine vision, industrial automation, physical AI, scientific research and medical imaging, including use cases involving edge computing and AI-driven systems.
Alongside the funding round, Singular Photonics announced that Dipesh Patel, former CTO of semiconductor company Arm, has joined its board of directors.
The new funding will be used to expand Singular Photonics' engineering capacity, develop additional image sensors and accelerate the introduction of new products in response to customer demand.
