German smart home startup Senic raises $4 million in seed funding

Senic, a smart home technology startup from Germany, has secured a seed round of $4 million from Birchmere Ventures, Target Partners, and home appliance manufacturer Gira.

Berlin-based Senic, which previously participated in Y Combinator, designs smart home systems, including a smart home device controller called NUIMO and a lamp called COVI. The products were originally crowdfunded. The new funds from VCs will be used for expanding its product portfolio and making smart home technologies more accessible to customers beyond the more technically minded.

“We believe that the way most people interact with technology is broken, we should be demanding better designed interfaces and more seamless interactions,” said CEO Tobias Eichenwald. “With this new capital, we’re able to expand our team and product line, continuing to deliver our users products that are beautifully crafted and make the smart home more human.”

“The current offering of smart home appliances is predominantly built with technical aspects in mind,” added Target Partners’ Michael Münnix. “Senic addresses a large demand for smart home interfaces that focus on interaction design and build quality, effortless user experience, not only the technology, and thus takes the complexity out of the smart home.”
