Swiss-based Daedalean flies in with $58 million for future air taxis

Empowering the future of air mobility, Swiss AI startup Daedalean has wrapped up a funding round of $58 million to develop the next generation of AI-based systems for application in safety-critical flight control for new electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) and existing aircraft like air taxis and heavy-lift drones.

The funding was led by a consortium of investors, including Carthona Capital, Amino Capital, Redalpine Venture Partners and Honeywell Ventures.

The additional investment will enable the Zurich-based startup to bring its machine-learning-based visual guidance, navigation and control suite to market over the next four years.

Founded in 2016 by Dr. Luuk van Dijk (CEO and CTO) and co-founder Anna Chernova (CPO-Product), the platform is building autonomous piloting software systems for today’s civil aircraft and advanced aerial mobility of tomorrow.

Daedalean’s team has today grown to more than 50 members including software engineers, avionics specialists and pilots. The company has worked with the European Union Aviation Safety Agency and the US Federal Aviation Administration to define appropriate means of certifying safety and fitness-for-purpose of machine learning based safety-critical avionics systems for navigation, collision and terrain avoidance and landing guidance in manned and unmanned aircraft.
