ARM buys UK-based computer vision tech firm Apical for $350 million in cash

British semiconductor giant ARM has acquired Apical, a London-headquartered company that specialises in imaging and embedded computer vision technology, for $350 million in cash.

The acquisition, closed yesterday, should help propel ARM's growth in new markets such as connected vehicles, robotics, smart cities, security systems and IoT devices.

Apical says its advanced imaging products are already used in more than 1.5 billion smartphones and approximately 300 million other consumer/industrial devices including IP cameras, digital stills cameras and tablets.

Apical was founded in 2002 and employs approximately 100 people, mainly at a research and development centre in Loughborough, UK.
