CheckRecipient has announced a funding round of $2.7 million from lead investors Accel and LocalGlobe for its email security platform.

Winton Ventures, Amadeus Capital Partners, and Crane also participated in the round.

The London-based company has gained customers in the UK in the legal, healthcare, and financial services sectors, and plans to launch in the US. The new funds will be invested in doubling its staff to 24 by hiring more in the areas of engineering and business development.

CheckRecipient has developed an email security platform that uses machine learning to scan email data to determine usage patterns and behaviour to ensure that emails with sensitive data are delivered to the correct recipient. The founders claim that this technique will help in detecting any anomalies and curtailing damage done by human error.

“It’s human nature to fear the shark when we go swimming, but it’s crossing the road, an activity we do daily almost without thinking, that is more likely to kill you,” said CEO Tim Sadler. “There’s currently an obsession with the detection of malicious insider and external attackers, but the most common data security incidents reported to the ICO [Information Commissioner's Office] are all linked to human error.”

The platform will satisfy clients and regulators alike, the company said, in light of the forthcoming EU GDPR rules.

Luciana Lixandru, partner at lead investor Accel said she believes CheckRecipient can be a “gold-standard email and data security product.”
