Finland’s KNL Networks has raised $10 million in a new Series A round led by Creandum with participation from previous investors Inventure and Butterfly Ventures and a number of angels.
The startup, which has been in stealth for over four years, describes itself as “internet anywhere” with its wireless communications system that provides IP communications to isolated and inaccessible areas.
KNL says it can provide IP-based communications over radio waves, reaching across thousands of kilometres to areas that are largely unserved. These types of areas have usually been serviced by satellite but that also means high maintenance costs.
The company is currently operating its systems on ocean fleets moving across the Atlantic and Pacific. Other use cases include autonomous vessels, the internet of things, and live streaming of sensor data. The “always-on” nature of KNL’s system makes it ideal for critical situations like natural disasters, according to the company.
“Like Facebook and Google, we see ‘Internet Anywhere’ as a means to an end, and we believe our technology is ideally suited to making that happen in a wide range of industries, applications and geographies worldwide,” said Toni Linden, CEO of KNL.
KNL Networks is headquartered in Oulu with another office in Helsinki and a presence in Norway and the UK.
