Europe's newest unicorn: Amsterdam's MessageBird closes $200 million funding round at $3 billion valuation

Amsterdam-based cloud communications platform MessageBird has become Europe’s newest unicorn after announcing a $200 million Series C round at a valuation of $3 billion. The company’s very first funding round landed at $60 million back in 2017, after about six years of bootstrapping.

Silicon Valley’s Spark Capital led the Series C round, with participation from Bonnier, Glynn Capital, LGT Lightstone, Longbow, Mousse Partners and New View Capital. Existing investors Accel, Atomico, and Y-Combinator also participated in this round. The Dutch company has built a messaging platform that allows businesses to interact with their customers on a variety of channels. They call it an ‘Omnichannel Platform-as-a-Service’ (OPaaS). So customer service reps can chat across WhatsApp, SMS, Voice, Messenger, WeChat, Google Business Messaging, Line and Telegram  — and these interactions are all consolidated into one thread within the Dutch app. Of its 15,000 customers, MessageBird serves big brands such as Lufthansa Airlines, Heineken, Hugo Boss, Rituals Cosmetics and SAP, along with fast-growing tech companies such as Uber, Glovo, HelloFresh, and Deliveroo. The funding will be used to triple the size of the global team and further expand into its core markets in Europe, Asia and Latin America, as the company officially launches a “Work from Anywhere” policy. As part of this latest investment Spark Capital’s Will Reed will join the board.
