Oslo-born startup SafetyWing snags $8 million to expand insurance options for remote teams

SafetyWing, an Norwegian-founded startup that offers health insurance solutions for the growing remote workforce, has raised $8 million in a Series A round led by early Spotify and Klarna investor Creandum with participation from previous investors Rocketship and byFounders.

The founders’ vision is to “replicate the Norwegian social safety net globally,” particularly as remote work becomes the new normal. So SafetyWing has developed a remote health insurance scheme for startups and businesses with distributed teams, covering 175 countries. When the startup launched in Oslo three years ago, the first product was travel insurance for digital nomads or just anyone (below the age of 39) who likes to travel. That earned SafetyWing a €3 million seed round in summer 2019. Now the Y Combinator-backed company is based in San Francisco, and new products are in the pipeline. Coming soon is a ‘remote doctor' service, tele-health consultations with a doctor from anywhere in the world, and slated for later this year is a ‘remote pension’. Carl Fritjofsson, partner at Creandum, commented: “Remote work is the most fundamental change to ever happen to knowledge workers and will truly open up a global market for talent. We believe SafetyWing will become one of the most important companies powering the underlying infrastructure of this movement.”
