Glovo, one of Europe’s biggest on-demand delivery players, has announced the appointment of Narek Verdian as Chief Technology Officer to help drive its ambitious tech strategy. Verdian is tasked with expanding the engineering team from 300 to over 500 by the end of this year. Glovo’s engineers are based in Barcelona, the company’s headquarters, and Warsaw, where a tech hub opened back in 2019.
Those new engineers are needed if Glovo is to achieve new q-commerce goals of delivering “everything” within cities in thirty minutes or less, through its network of dark stores. The company says its tech infrastructure needs work, such as using enhanced AI and machine learning to strengthen warehouse management systems. Though the company has only 18 dark stores right now, it plans to have 100 in core European markets by the end of this year. Last month the company announced a €100 million deal with Stoneweg to develop at least 80 real estate sites for this purpose. Having spent more than a decade working with established brands including American Express, Expedia and Hotels.com, Verdian is prepared for the challenges ahead. “We’ll see Glovo take its engineering capabilities to the next level,” he said.
