German deep tech Vara on track to accelerate breast cancer screening

After recently launching its first co-branded breast screening unit in Mexico, Germany’s deep tech startup Vara has roped in eminent radiologist Professor Katja Pinker-Domenig as lead medical advisor to offer every woman worldwide with life-saving access to better breast cancer screening.

Having published more than 200 peer-reviewed papers, Dr Pinker-Domenig is an expert in translational and clinical breast oncologic gender imaging.  She and her team are amongst the leaders in the field in understanding how AI can be used to develop biomarkers for precision medicine and treatment of disease.  She will collaborate with the Vara leadership team on the topics of clinical integration and product development.

Jonas Muff, CEO, Vara said: “This new appointment marks a significant step on our journey towards improved, high-quality and universal breast screening access to all.”

Developed in collaboration with radiologists within Germany’s screening programme, and having been trained on more than 6 million mammograms, the startup combines the power of AI with the strengths of human radiologists, in order to improve both.

Since its launch in 2019, the platform has been integrated into more than 20% of screening units in its home country. It has seen 10x growth in the number of mammograms it can analyse.
