Blue Monday is the most popular day to look for a new job

Originally cooked up as a marketing ploy and dismissed by scientists as pseudoscience, clearly, the term Blue Monday has resonated with residents of the northern hemisphere
Blue Monday is the most popular day to look for a new job

You might think compensation or company values are the most divisive catalysts prompting people to look for a new job.

But it turns out Blue Monday, a.k.a the most depressing day of the year (which falls on January 16 this year) is a big influence. Its effects have infiltrated the job seeker psyche to the point that January is now the most popular month for people to quit their jobs.

At the beginning of 2022, France saw its highest number of resignations ever with nearly 520,000 resignations. And in the Netherlands, the first quarter of 2022 saw a total of 1.9 million people starting a new job—400,000 more than in the first quarter of 2021. In fact, more than a third of European workers are ready to quit their jobs in the first three months of 2023, according to a new report by McKinsey

There’s also the financial benefit to employees to consider: job hoppers are able to increase their salaries and improve their benefits over those that stay put in their current companies and with inflation, energy prices and the cost of living continuing to impact on the spending power of European households, every cent counts.

The good news is that January is also seen to be the best month of the year to look for and secure a new role—hiring managers, bolstered by new hiring budgets that need to be spent, are able to add to their teams or replace the people who have just left—and tech workers continue to be in high demand.

Below are five tech companies that boast impressive credentials and employee-focused workplace cultures. They are all currently hiring across a range of roles but don’t forget to check out the Tech.eu Job Board for hundreds of additional opportunities.
