Sofinnova Partners closes oversubscribed €82M Sofinnova MD Start IV fund

European life sciences venture capital firm Sofinnova Partners has closed its fourth medtech fund, Sofinnova MD Start IV, at €82 million. The oversubscribed fund will expand Sofinnova’s medtech company-creation strategy across Europe and the US, providing additional capacity to launch new ventures and support them through key stages of development.

Sofinnova plans to launch six to eight medtech companies through the fund over the next five years. MD Start IV will support ventures from inception through key clinical and operational milestones, providing founders with capital and hands-on support.

The strategy combines clinical insight, entrepreneurial talent and operational expertise to develop companies addressing unmet medical needs. Sofinnova also provides portfolio companies with access to its global network, drawing on more than a decade of experience building and scaling medtech companies.

Sofinnova MD Start is one of the few strategies in Europe focused on creating medtech companies from the ground up. What makes the model distinctive is the active role our team plays in building and supporting every company from day one. This latest fund will allow us to scale that approach and remain a key part of Sofinnova's platform across the life sciences value chain,

said Antoine Papiernik, Chairman and Managing Partner of Sofinnova Partners.

Anne Osdoit, Partner at Sofinnova Partners, said the new fund will enable the firm to continue working with engineers, clinicians and scientists to help move medical technologies from the laboratory towards clinical use.

The new fund follows Sofinnova MD Start III, a €63 million fund that invested across six companies. The six companies have collectively raised more than €140 million in follow-on financing.

Companies from the MD Start portfolio include LimFlow, which was acquired by Inari Medical for up to $415 million, and PreCARDIA, acquired by Abiomed. CorWave has raised more than €100 million, while BrightHeart has secured FDA and CE Mark clearance and recently raised €11 million in Series A funding. Another portfolio company, Moon Surgical, received FDA and CE Mark clearance for its Maestro system, which has been used to treat more than 3,700 patients to date.
