French startup Aryballe Technologies has raised a €3.1 million round led by the Japanese chemicals conglomerate Asahi Kasei for its "electronic nose."
Aryballe Technologies, founded in 2014 in Grenoble, makes a device that mimics the human nose to identify, detect, and measure smells and tastes. The innovative technology behind it was developed at the Institute for Nanoscience and Cryogenics (INAC). The device has potential applications in medicine, food quality control, pollution control, and in household appliances (for example, it could be integrated in a refrigerator to detect expired foods).
Asahi Kasei employs 32,800 people and reported sales of €7.1 billion in its last fiscal year that ended in March 2016. The investment, made through San Francisco-based Asahi Kasei Ventures, is part of the company's strategy to invest in sensor technologies.
