Asistensi, a Madrid-based insurtech startup that wants to improve medical coverage for migrants’ relatives back home, has secured $3 million in seed funding. The round was co-led by the venture capital funds Alma Mundi Ventures and Mexico-based Mountain Nazca.

With its first product launched in March 2020, the company enables migrants to buy emergency medical insurance for loved ones in their country of origin. The insurance can be  purchased online without any medical admission tests. Asistensi offers telemedicine services through its digital platform, at-home medical visits by local doctors, ambulance transfers, medicine delivery and special insurance coverage for hospitalisation.

To make this happen, the Spanish company partners with insurers in each country where it operates. Currently operating in Latin America, the company will use the new investment to expand into more countries on the continent.

The health insurtech startup was founded by Dr. Andrés Simón González-Silén, Dr. Luis Enrique Velásquez Díaz and Armando Baquero Ponte. The three boast over 16 years of experience as executives in the Latin American healthcare sector and management positions in global financial, insurance and venture capital institutions.

“In Asistensi we believe in a world where everyone can have access to health coverage for emergencies regardless of their status or where they live,” said Dr. Gonzalez-Silén. “We believe that solving this challenge is one of the main barriers to reducing poverty.”
