Deliveroo acquires software development firm Cultivate, adding a tech hub in Edinburgh

British tech unicorn Deliveroo has acquired Scottish software design and development firm Cultivate, giving it a tech hub in Edinburgh - its first UK office outside of its London home base - as it continues to grow at a healthy pace.

The food delivery service giant had worked with Cultivate in recent years, as the Scottish firm helped build Deliveroo's payments systems. Together, the companies say they will continue to work on improving the payments experience for couriers and partner restaurants, provide more data to both, as well as additional ways to offer financial support (e.g. with cash flow management).

Deliveroo says it will initially double headcount in the next 12 months in Edinburgh and is aiming to house 50 tech jobs in its new Scottish office within the next three years.

Commenting on the deal, Deliveroo VP of Engineering Dan Winn said: "As a British company, Deliveroo is proud to be investing in Edinburgh and creating more high skilled jobs in the UK. Edinburgh is one of the UK’s fastest growing tech hubs, with access to an excellent talent pool of highly skilled people and university graduates. Deliveroo is committed to offering riders flexible, well-paid work and helping restaurants to grow their businesses. Building on Cultivate’s expertise, we are excited to create new products and services that will help us achieve this."

Deliveroo says it currently works with over 80,000 restaurants and take-aways, as well as 60,000 riders; it supports those and aims for growth with roughly 2,500 employees.
