German startup e-bility, maker of Kumpan Electric e-scooter brand, has raised €3 million as part of a strategic partnership with EIT InnoEnergy, a sustainable energy institute which is looking to expand its portfolio in mobility solutions.

Founded in Remagen in 2010, e-bility has developed an exchangeable, smart battery system. The battery package is a plug and play solution, controlled by AI software, which can be detached from the scooter and re-charged in standard sockets. Therefore, the battery could actually be used for many more products than the e-scooter.

“Their potential impact extends far beyond mobility. The technology encapsulated within their smart battery system could become a de-facto standard for the sustainable design of all sorts of products,” said Christian Müller, CEO for InnoEnergy Germany.

With the new funding, and the help of EIT InnoEnergy’s go-to-market support, the German startup will expand into new European markets. Special attention will also be given to e-bility’s software platform, developing smart sharing, location and payment features as well as scooter leasing and predictive maintenance functions.
