Swedish digital health startup Joint Academy raises $7 million

Malmo-based healthcare startup Joint Academy that provides “digital care” for osteoarthritis patients in Sweden has raised $7 million in a Series A funding round led by Alfvén & Didriksson. The startup plans to use the money to scale up its offering to countries outside Sweden.

Joint Academy's digital health platform connects osteoarthritis patients with physiotherapists who provide them with individual care and recommend exercises. The company cites a study that shows that “close to 25 percent of the patients who asked for surgery before the digital treatment changed their mind after a few weeks of treatment.”

The company also claims that about 25 percent of the patients who used to manage their symptoms with medication were able to drop the painkillers after a few weeks of receiving treatment through Joint Academy's platform.

“I like the fact that the treatment is clearly based on science, and I also feel that the patients are more involved in their treatment and take responsibility to actually do their recommended exercises,” said Emelie Blennow, a physiotherapist at Joint Academy.

Currently, there are more than 100 physiotherapists are working on the Joint Academy platform.
