Dresden-founded industrial robotics startup Wandelbots has raised €6 million in a funding round from Paua Ventures, EQT Ventures, and existing investors. The company plans to use the money to hire more people and expand internationally.
Founded in 2017 by a team from the Technische Universität Dresden, Wandelbots has come up with a way to “teach” industrial robots to perform new tasks in a way that's faster and more flexible than straightforward hard-coding. Its first product, Wandelbox, allows to program robots using “smart clothes.” The company explained in a press release that “sensor-attached jackets and gloves track human motion in real time and transfer this to robotic movement, so non-experts are able to guide robots through a task by example.”
Wandelbots claims that the process is not just about a simple repetition of the movements: the software is supposedly able to “understand” the tasks and suggest optimised solutions. The startup also stated that its first industrial trials showed that “automation of robotic applications can be done up to 20 times faster and is 10 times more cost-effective.”
