Retail giant Amazon has announced the launch of a new development centre in Helsinki that has been established specifically to support Amazon Scout, the autonomous delivery vehicle active in the US.
The new team is slated to work hand in hand with R&D teams in Seattle, Cambridge, and Tübingen on 3D software designed to simulate real-world environments for Scout to safely navigate around obstacles while making deliveries.
Amazon is currently recruiting for the roles of Sr. Machine Learning Engineer, Programme Manager, and Senior Software Development Engineer for Scout, as the “team in Helsinki will grow over time.”
Amazon's decision to get in the game in Europe should certainly bolster Estonian-founded Starship Technologies step this morning, as the startup has already been in the game since 2014. And, word on the street has it that Amazon offered to acquire them, but they politely declined. Now, to see if they can get head to head with Amazon's clout (for better or for worse) remains to be seen.
