Austrian job search startup Firstbird raises €2 million

Vienna-based recruitment tech startup Firstbird has raised €2 million from Swiss recruitment portal JobCloud, VC network investiere.ch, and the European Super Angels Club (ESAC).

Firstbird turns employees into headhunters through referrals. Employees are notified of job openings in their workplace and are incentivised to spread the word around their professional network. Companies pay a monthly fee to use the platform; it currently has around 2,000 clients, including Deloitte, Arvato, and the City of Zurich.

The new funds will be used to grow the startup’s sales teams and expand its network of partners as well as internationalise its product offering.

“With the new investment, we will expand our markets in Germany, Switzerland, and Austria. In addition to small and medium-sized companies, we intend to win more global companies, and to strengthen our position as the leading referral program,” said CEO Arnim Wahls.

“Employee referrals are an effective way of promoting the digitalization of the HR department, strengthening employer branding and counteracting skills shortages. I still see great potential growth here,” added Renato Profico, managing director of JobCloud.

Wahls told WirtschaftsWoche that it aims to be profitable this year. The company was launched in 2014 following participation in a Microsoft accelerator in Berlin and now employs 31 people.

Former CEO of employer rating platform kununu, Dr. Ekkehard Veser has also been appointed an advisory board member.
