French curated freelance marketplace Crème de la Crème raises €3 million to expand to the UK

Paris-based Crème de la Crème has landed €3 million in funding led by Alto Invest with participation from its existing investors, including French entrepreneurs Alain Thibaut and Loic Le Meur. The company, which opened a London office in May, plans to use the money to expand in the UK.

Founded in 2015, Crème de la Crème has created a curated community of freelancers working in tech, data, design, marketing, and communication, whom it connects to more than 5,000 clients. The list of larger returning customers includes L'Oreal, LinkedIn, Airbnb, and BNP Paribas.

Unlike traditional freelance marketplaces like Upwork or Fiverr, Crème de la Crème uses a freelancer matching algorithm together with manual curation performed by an in-house team. After sending in a project, each client is assigned an account manager and is promised to receive up to five quotes from freelancers within 48 hours.

For larger projects, the selection experts can also form a team of freelancers.

“The freelancers from our community are independent but rarely work alone,” said Jean-Charles Varlet, CEO of Crème de la Crème. “More and more of them would rather work in a team on more ambitious projects.”

Speaking of the planned UK expansion, the startup mentioned that more than 3,000 freelancers in the country have already joined the platform; on the customer side, more than 500 British companies have already used Crème de la Crème.

In addition to the expansion plans, Crème de la Crème has announced a mobile app for its freelancers, which will be released in September. The app would allow freelancers to “manage their projects, engage with the rest of the community, invoice and receive money, and be assisted in the administrative challenges they may face,” the company stated in a press release.
