Oslo-founded urban planning simulation startup Spacemaker raises $25 million

Spacemaker, a Norwegian-founded startup that applies AI to architecture and urban planning, has landed $25 million in a funding round led by Atomico and Northzone, with participation from Danish property developer NREP, Nordic property developer OBOS, UK real estate technology fund Round Hill Ventures, and earlier investors including Norwegian construction technology investor Construct Venture.

Spacemaker has come up with what it describes as “the world’s first platform that allows developers and architects to use AI at massive scale to generate and analyse optimal solutions to multi-building residential development design based on physical data, regulations, and project requirements.” The platform can analyse the development projects and optimise for parameters like noise or sun exposure, as well as generate and choose from hundreds of possible layouts.

Launched in late 2018, the startup has already attracted property developers from the Nordics as customers, including Skanska, Obos, AF Gruppen, and NREP. It employs a team of some 100 people that consists of data scientists, mathematicians, software developers, architects, and urban planners.

Here's a brief video that explains the startup's vision and product:
