Berlin-based search engine/discovery feed/mobile browser startup Xayn has raised $12 million in a new funding round. The company expects to use the new capital to propel further product development, as well as begin expansion plans in the Asian market, commencing with Japan. To date, the firm has raised in excess of $23 million.
Beginning life as a research project at The University of Oxford and Imperial College London in 2017, and launched in December of last year, Xayn combines privacy-protecting AI technology and clean design to provide users a safe and secure, yet easy to interact with search and discovery experience. Contrary to traditional methods, Xayn’s AI does not rely on a centralised data repository, but rather learns directly on a users’ device. In doing so, no private information is transmitted.
“In an industry in which selling data and delivering ads en masse are the norm, we choose to lead with privacy instead and put user satisfaction front and center,” comments co-founder and CEO Leif-Nissen Lundbæk. “Xayn is the search and discovery engine that does not force users to make any compromises – not with the quality of their online experience and search results and certainly not with the privacy of their personal data.”
Xayn’s Series A funding was led by Global Brain and KDDI, and saw participation from the previous backers, including Earlybird.
