Spain's Voicemod gets $8 million for voice avatars that enhance gaming and other online experiences

Voicemod, a Valencia-based audio avatar startup, has raised $8 million in a Series A round led by BITKRAFT Ventures, a Berlin-based firm that invests solely in the eSports sector. The Spanish company will use this investment to launch mobile apps, expand further into the Asian markets, and invest in AI-based voice and speech conversion technologies to create voices that are even more realistic.

“Voice is a fundamental signature of human identity. Being able to alter your voice in digital platforms/games is an important tool to elevate human expression and create greater entertainment experiences,” adds Malte Barth, founding general partner of BITKRAFT. Using a combination of AI and digital signal processing, Voicemod offers users the ability to change one’s voice in real-time, which can enhance the overall gaming or streaming/social sharing experience. Gamers can experiment with different personas, switching among various voices, or integrate sound memes and other voice effects. In a press release, the startup offers these examples: a Fortnite player could add the effect of being out of breath after parachuting onto the island, or a Grand Theft Auto player could speak with an echo while driving through a tunnel.

“Image and video filters have increased in popularity and Voicemod is bringing the missing piece - a voice filter that enhances gameplay with fully immersive audio experiences,” explains CEO and co-founder Jaime Bosch. “We create sound effects that can take gamers and content creators anywhere and allow them to become anyone or anything.”

Indeed, the company’s website encourages visitors to “troll like a pro!”. So far the software has 10 million PC downloads on PC, and the company is already profitable and growing quickly. Founded in 2014, Voicemod has doubled the size of its team since this past January to a total of 55 employees.
