Spanish location data visualisation startup CartoDB scores $23m in growth funding from Accel, Salesforce and others

CartoDB, the Madrid/New York-based startup that specialises in location data analysis and visualisation software, has secured $23 million in Series B funding to support its international growth.

The round was led by new investor Accel Partners, with participation from Salesforce Ventures and prior backers Earlybird Ventures and Kibo Ventures, and brings the total capital raised by CartoDB to $31 million. Accel's Harry Nelis is joining the CartoDB board of directors.

CartoDB says the fresh cash will be used for product development, marketing and sales, and to expand its partnership programs worldwide. The startup says it has doubled its number of employees in the last 12 months - it currently has double the number of people in Madrid (40) than it does in NYC (20) - and grown 'customer adoption' by 350 percent.

“The market for location intelligence is snowballing,” posited Javier de la Torre, CartoDB co-founder and CEO in a statement. “There are unprecedented opportunities for companies in virtually every industry to leverage this data in valuable ways, and we're determined to help make it easy.”

Current CartoDB clients include Twitter, Google Trends, BBVA, New York City and Deloitte.
