UK startup Electronic Theatre raises £8.6 million to 'make screen time social again'

UK-based Electronic Theatre has secured £8.6 million in Series A funding in a round led by Project A and Index Ventures, and joined by the likes of Sweet Capital and JamJar Investments, to develop its "new digital entertainment platform".

Electronic Theater was co-founded by Will Dean, who is also the co-founder of the endurance obstacle course Tough Mudder, and basically offers immersive 'Adventures' for groups in interactive digital rooms.

The startup's custom developed ‘LightBox’ Adventures pods host up to six simultaneous players, and feature a range of technologies including projection mapping, touch screens, motion tracking and surround sound.

The first of its kind opened last October on London’s Southbank, and is said to have welcomed more than 3,500 people since its launch.

The capital injection will allow Electronic Theater to boost the development of the technology platform (with video capturing tech, voice recognition, HD sound etc.) and geographical scale-up.

In 2020, the startup plans to roll out 9 new units in the UK and up to 3 units in the US, but the real ambition is to open 1,000 units globally in the next five years.
