Dublin's Flipdish reels in €40 million for restaurant tech designed to cut out delivery giants

Flipdish, an Irish software that helps restaurants build branded websites and ordering apps, has raised €40 million from Tiger Global to continue expanding internationally. Flipdish says restaurant owners are increasingly bringing their online ordering in house to avoid relying on a food delivery marketplace like Delivery Hero or Just Eat Takeaway, which reduces painful commission fees and builds a closer relationship with customers. Ultimately the company’s goal is “to protect and power a diverse, independent food sector,” says co-founder and CEO Conor McCarthy. Operating in 15 countries including France, Germany, Ireland, Spain, UK and US, Flipdish serves independent restaurants as well as major brands like Subway, Wagamama, Cojean, Dunnes Stores and Eddie Rockets. In December the Irish company announced the creation of 300 jobs over the next 12 months as part of its rapid expansion. The majority are technology roles such as software architects, data scientists, mobile engineers and product designers. Others include customer success, customer support, marketing and sales.
