Russian-founded/Amsterdam-based emerging markets same-day courier Borzo has announced the appointment of former Chief Strategy & Data Officer at Glovo Idriss Al Rifai as the company’s new CEO.
Serving as one of the chief architects at one of the fastest-growing logistics companies ever, Al Rifai will build upon his experience scaling in Europe, Western Asia, and Africa, now take the top spot at Borzo as it continues to expand and develop new products on a global scale.
“Borzo is at the crossroads of its expansion. It has grown in over 10 markets now and has built a remarkable product. The key now is to be able to make Borzo a truly global company, push it to the next level and coordinate all of its internal parts, efforts, and innovations. It is incredibly exciting to be part of this journey and I am confident that we are going to be able to do that with our team”, commented Al Rifai.
Borzo, who’s backers include Abu Dhabi’s Mubadala, VNV Global, Russian Direct Investment Fund, Flashpoint Venture Capital has taken on board only $94 million in investor money over the course of 9 years. The company’s most recent funding (Series C) arrived last august, to the tune of $35 million, and earlier this month, the courier service snapped up India’s 90 minute courier service NOW.
“We believe that in order for Borzo to reach its next milestone we needed the expertise and leadership of a seasoned executive who already operated at that scale. Idriss Al Rifai fits that bill perfectly and we are happy to entrust him with the company we founded”, added Borzo co-founder and chairman and now former CEO Mike Alexandrovski.
Sidebar and fun fact: Earlier in his career Idriss Al Rifai was a strategy consultant and a reserve officer in the French Special Forces.
