With more than $1 billion raised, Dutch cloud communications scale-up MessageBird can certainly afford to buy a domain name here and there.
But outbidding publicly-listed e-scooter and e-bike juggernaut Bird for the bird.com domain name? That warrants some special attention.
Domain Name Wire recently confirmed that MessageBird is, in fact, the new owner of the bird.com domain name, acquired through an exclusive auction with Monte Cahn of Right of the Dot, after an earlier sale for $2.5 million fizzled out in 2021.
A little bird (ha!) informed us that MessageBird ended up coughing up more than $10 million for the prized domain name thanks to the bidding war, but we can't independently confirm that, so take it with a grain of bird seed (ha!).
Either way, it must have been expensive enough for no one to act surprised when the company officially rebrands to Bird.com sooner rather than later.
PS: yes that is a photo of a European robin above, why do you ask?
