Finnish quantum technology startup S-Transistors has raised €2.6 million in pre-seed funding to develop integrated circuits based on superconducting transistors, initially targeting the control and signal-routing challenges involved in scaling cryogenic quantum computers. The round was led by Nordic early-stage investor Lifeline Ventures, with participation from an angel investor.

Originating from VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland, S-Transistors is developing superconducting transistor technology that combines high-speed performance with ultra-low power consumption at cryogenic temperatures. While the technology could have applications across classical computing, AI and high-performance computing hardware, spacecraft electronics and particle detectors, the company is initially focused on quantum computing.

Scaling superconducting quantum computers will require more efficient ways to control processors and transmit signals. Today, much of the control electronics operates at room temperature and connects to the QPU through multiple cables, becoming increasingly complex and power-intensive as qubit numbers grow. Moving this hardware closer to the quantum processor could improve scalability, but conventional silicon transistors face performance and power limitations at cryogenic temperatures.

S-Transistors is developing superconducting transistors as an alternative, designed to provide high-speed signal control with low power dissipation within the same cryogenic environment as the quantum processor. The company says its technology is already available at wafer scale.

According to co-founder and CEO Dr Heorhii Bohuslavskyi, bringing control and interface hardware closer to the quantum chip could provide a path towards larger systems, provided the electronics can operate efficiently at extremely low temperatures.

Superconducting transistors are exactly that missing piece of hardware for large-scale, energy-efficient quantum computing,

said Bohuslavskyi.

S-Transistors' first product will be a superconducting-transistor-based multiplexer designed to integrate with existing cryogenic setups and support quantum device development and prototyping. The company plans to deliver it to early customers and strategic partners during its first year of operation.

The funding will be used to develop cryogenic signal control and handling prototypes, establish a cryogenic laboratory, set up a pilot manufacturing line for its integrated circuits and expand the team.
