Portuguese medtech Tonic App raises €3.5 million and announces Dr. François Sarkozy as new chairman

Tonic App, a Porto-based mobile medical app, raised €3.5 million co-led by Vesalius Biocapital Partners and Armilar Venture Partner. Alongside the new investment, the company announced acclaimed French physician Dr. François Sarkozy as its new chairman of the Board of Directors.

Tonic App is a digital healthcare tool designed to help professionals diagnose and treat patients. The app consolidates all the resources doctors need for day-to-day work.

“I am excited and honoured to join and chair the board of Tonic App at the cutting edge of eHealth. I am convinced that Tonic App will become the healthcare professionals’ companion across Europe for an even better management of patients,” said Dr. Sarkozy.

Sarkozy has worked in several large pharmaceutical and consulting companies and is founder of Tous Pour la Santé TV, which means “All for Health,” an online channel promoting a reliable and factual discussion about health.

Daniela Seixas, co-founder and CEO of Tonic App and herself a physician, added: “I am grateful to be working with Dr. Sarkozy. His experience in the healthcare industry is enormous, not only in the French market but throughout Europe. I am sure our work together will have a huge impact in Tonic App.”

Since its founding in 2016, the Portuguese company has launched the mobile platform, received CE certification as a medical device, and acquired over one third of the doctors in Portugal. Current clients include some of the largest healthcare multinational companies such as Medtronic, Novartis, IQVIA and the human resources company, Randstad.

With the new investment, the startup aims to expand in three of the five largest European healthcare markets: France, Spain and the United Kingdom.

Seixas continued, “The digital healthcare market is under significant transformation and that is why this is the right time for a rapid geographic expansion. Medical doctors are increasingly using digital platforms for their work and the other healthcare stakeholders have understood the value of partnering with an independent company that ensures access to an established professional community. I want to make my colleagues' day-to-day life easier with the help of technology, to give them more time for what matters the most — their patients.”
