The European edition of the open source conference OSCON will be taking place in Amsterdam between October 26 and 28, bringing together some of the biggest players and budding startups from the open source community.
Open source has moved from “disruption to default” and the next question is, how does open source remain sustainable?
That’s one of the central questions that O’Reilly Media, the company behind the conference and others like Velocity and Next:Money, will try to answer by bringing together people from a multitude of disciplines and businesses but who all care about open source.
July’s sister conference in Portland, OR drew 4,700 attendees and this October’s event is expected to draw 500 attendees to the RAI convention centre in Amsterdam.
OSCON tackles the questions and concerns from the open source community head on through talks and tutorials.
Among these issues are security and privacy, the real hot topic in tech and culture; data and its growing influence; software architecture; devices from mobile to wearables; and collaboration on projects with open source peers.
The speakers
OSCON has several keynote speakers throughout the three days of the conference such as PayPal senior JavaScript architect Douglas Crockford and developer advocate for the Google Cloud Platform, Mandy Waite.
Keynote speakers will talk on a variety of topics surrounding open source.
ThoughtWorks CTO Rebecca Parsons, with her 30 years’ experience in the field of large-scale distributed, services based applications, will deliver a talk on The Evolution of Evolutionary Architecture.
Sam Aaron from The University of Cambridge Computer Laboratory and the creator of Sonic Pi, a live coding tool that creates music in real time through code will present Programming as Performance – Live Coding with Sonic Pi, guiding delegates through how he writes code in real time before live audiences for a music performance unlike any other. Sonic Pi is free to use and Aaron will be discussing how it can be put to use, not just by artists, but in the classroom too.
Other speakers on the OSCON agenda, whether it’s small business or enterprise, will be staging various sessions and tutorials.
GitHub’s Brent Beer will be speaking on better collaboration with other developers on GitHub.
Julie Cameron, a front end developer at Articulate and a figurehead at the Michigan branch of Girl Develop It, a non-profit that provides opportunities for women interested in web and software development, will be discussing how to revamp your approach to CSS.
Leslie Hawthorn will present Fear of failing fast: How to avoid sabotaging your success, a pertinent look at dealing with failure and bouncing back to craft your own way to success.
Ignite
Ignite is a series of quick fire presentations about technology, business, culture, and everything in between and on Wednesday October 28, Ignite comes to OSCON in Amsterdam. Ignite speakers are limited to 20 slides per presentation, changing every 15 seconds, so speakers are always kept on their toes. Anyone interested in speaking at Ignite can submit a proposal ahead of the September 25 deadline.
Hardware Showcase
OSCON’s hardware showcase is an opportunity for makers to exhibit the device they’ve created and share their creation with other makers, developers, users, and investors. The showcase is open to all to apply with the deadline of October 2. OSCON will choose ten of the best applicants who will then have the chance to take the stage on Monday October 27 and Tuesday October 28 at the OSCON Sponsor Pavilion to show off their wares. There is no fee to apply and winners will be notified by October 7. Submit your proposal here.
