Moovit, the Israeli public transportation app, has announced that it has become the world’s top local transport app, ahead of Google Transit and Apple Maps, and is now used by 28 million people across 700 cities in 58 countries.
It is adding a new city every 24 hours, claims the startup, with “hyper engaged” users crowdsourcing data on public transit while the app’s editor community, with 20,000 active users, have collectively added over three million data points this year.
Like Waze for public transport, the app collates data for the user on their best options for getting around the city and the company boasts providing data on nearly 300 metro areas where competing services aren’t available. Users can also submit their own Line & Station reports to keep others up to speed on transit quality or route delays.
User participation in the app is helping to build smarter cities and more public transport efficiency, said Alex Torres, Moovit’s VP of product marketing.
In January, Moovit secured $50 million in Series C funding from BMW i Ventures, Bernard Arnault Group, Nokia Growth Partners, Keolis, Sequoia Capital, Vaizra Investments, BRM Capital, and Gemini Partners, which valued the Israeli company at $450 million.
The startup may have grown to become the top public transit app but it still has other European competitors like Lithuania’s Trafi hot on its heels too.
