Amsterdam’s NewMotion, a provider of electric vehicle charge points, has been acquired by Shell. No terms were disclosed.
NewMotion, launched in 2009, is one of the largest networks of electric vehicles charging locations in Europe. Its technology will now be integrated into Shell’s business, including its retail locations around the continent.
“We are very pleased to have such a strong investor that fully supports our mission, enabling us to further expand across Europe at a time when the transition to electric vehicles is gathering pace,” said Sytse Zuidema, CEO of NewMotion, which has raised more than €13 million in funding but Shell is not a previous shareholder in the company.
The acquisition will mark “an early step” to ensuring customers can access more diverse refuelling options, added Matthew Tipper, vice president for new fuels at Shell.
“This move provides customers the flexibility to charge their electric vehicles at home, work and on the go,” he said. “When you add this customer offer to our current roll out of fast charging points on Shell forecourts, we believe we are developing the full raft of charge solutions required to support the future of EVs.”
